A Mercedes has crashed with a Citroen van on the M1 southbound, near Redbourn.

The incident took place prior to 6.21am this morning (Friday, January 26) between Junction 9 for Redbourn and Junction 8 for Hemel Hempstead and St Albans.

Eight miles of congestion were reported by National Highways at the time, with delays of up to 70 minutes.

Ambulance staff assessed one patient at the scene, who did not require hospital treatment.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Constabulary said: "Police were called at around 6.21am today to report a road traffic collision near to Junction 9 on the M1 southbound, involving a white Mercedes C 200 AMG Line and a white Citroen Berlingo van.

"Officers attended the scene along with colleagues from the Fire and Rescue and Ambulance services."

A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service added: "We were called at 6.21am with reports of a collision on the southbound carriageway of the M1 near St Albans.

"We sent an ambulance and an ambulance officer vehicle.

"One patient was assessed at the scene and did not require transport to hospital."
