Plans have been submitted for a new shop to be constructed on the driveway to a car park behind a Harpenden funeral parlour.

The application would see the driveway, situated next to L.C. Weston at 14 Leyton Road, make way for a new commercial space.

A dental surgery also sits at 14a Leyton Road, with the now-vacant car park having previously been used by Barclays bank.

A design and access statement attached to the application reads: "The car park is now only used for bin storage.

"There is not enough room to turn cars around within the car park so vehicles have to exit in reverse.

"The width of the access is also dangerously narrow making visibility very poor.

"Planning permission is sought to infill the area under no 14a Leyton Road and have a small single storey extension to the rear. This will provide a Class E retail unit.

"The new shop front will be visible from Leyton Road and is in the conservation area.

"The shopfront will be mainly glass with a timber frame and leaded lights above to match those existing at no 14 Leyton Road which will respect the surrounding buildings and enhance the Conservation area."
