The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms in the St Albans area.

The notice advises that "a band of squally, thundery rain" could affect the city and much of the south between 5am and 12noon today (Tuesday, November 14).

Damage to buildings from lightning strikes or strong winds can be expected, according to the Met Office.

The notice also warns of potential delays to train and plane journeys, poor driving conditions and "some short term loss of power and other services".

The Met Office's forecast for St Albans predicts a 40 per cent chance of rain at 10am, and a 50 per cent chance of rain between 12noon and 1pm.

Temperatures could reach 11 degrees, with a low of seven.
