Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept across Hertfordshire yesterday, with Harpenden being hit by floods and hail residents compared to "ping pong balls".

The Met Office had put a yellow weather warning in place for the whole of the south of England, with storms arriving in the evening as many tried to head home from work.

Station Road saw water cascading down the road thanks to heavy rains, with cars attempting to navigate the treacherous conditions.

There was heavy flooding elsewhere in the town, with one Twitter user capturing photos of residents wading through ankle-deep water.

As well as rain, thunder and lightning, Harpenden was also hit with heavy hail.

High Street businesses were forced to come and sweep the hail, described as being the size of "ping pong balls", to keep the pavements clear.
