A LOCAL Shakespeare theatre company, which helps schools to improve exam results in the subject, has been awarded a £16,000 contract.

The Redbourn-based MOPA (Message of Physical Action) Theatre Company has been selected by the English adviser at Hull City Council to take their unique Shakespeare experience to every secondary school in the region, with the aim of improving their SATS results.

The company was established more than 10 years ago by trained actor and Shakespeare expert Nic Brownlie from Redbourn because he felt that teaching the Bard's work could not be done properly by sitting at a desk.

The company's innovative approach to Shakespeare sees the team providing two-hour sessions in which they interact with the students to encourage them to assess the various ways of interpreting the themes and messages within the plays.

The 20-strong team travels all over the UK with their sessions which are tailored to every age group and various learning abilities.
