Martyn Wyndham-Read, whose magnificent voice and singing style have made him one of the UK’s best loved folk performers, is a late addition to a festival’s 2017 bill.

The second Kimpton Folk Festival will take over the Hertfordshire village on Saturday, July 1.

Martyn has been working with the legendary Shirley Collins on The Lawson Track – a production featuring songs and stories of Australian ‘People’s Poet’ Henry Lawson.

And he will be teaming up with Australian folk singer Christine Wheeler and festival chairman Doug Jenner to present Lawson’s life in story and song, in a tribute to the great Australian writer in the 150th year since his birth.

The concert will also feature local musician and actor Roland Taylor.

Commenting on his involvement in Kimpton Folk Festival, Martyn said: “I’m really pleased to be taking part in this new folk festival, especially in such a significant year.”

Doug Jenner said: “It’s a huge thrill to have Martyn as part of this year’s event, and doubly so to have the opportunity to perform with him again.”

In the early 1960s aged just 16, Martyn headed to the Antipodes with his guitar, to work on a sheep station at Emu Springs in South Australia.

While there, he quickly grew fascinated with the old songs he heard from the station hands before heading to Melbourne to become part of the local folk music revival.

Returning to England in 1967, he met up and recorded with renowned singer and collector A.L Lloyd, who had himself recently returned from Australia.

Thus began a long and highly successful international career spanning 40 years and more than 30 albums during which time he did more than any other artist to introduce the folk songs of Australia to international audiences.

There will be music and performances at Kimpton Folk Festival in the Memorial Hall, on the village green and in the parish church.

Appearing in the Memorial Hall will be the likes of Sam Kelly and The Lost Boys, and Wild Willy Barrett’s French Connection among others.
