Shots of wildlife, trains and people are among 100 photographs taken by local photographers on display at the Museum of St Albans until early January.

The photographs are by members of St Albans Camera Club and students from the University of Herts, Oaklands College and six St Albans schools.

The students’ pictures were submitted for a competition held by the camera club in conjunction with St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust. Sarah Bennett was the winner with her photograph, Bowl Skater, taken at the XC Skate Park in Hemel Hempstead.

The competition was sponsored by Taylor Walton Solicitors and Donato Cinicolo of @dc3 art donated the prize of a professional photographic masterclass.

Sarah described her winning entry saying: “I tried to anticipate the skater’s movements and take the shot just at the right time.”

Cllr Annie Brewster, St Albans council’s portfolio holder for sport, leisure and heritage, said: “Having attended the judging process a few weeks ago to select 40 photos from the hundreds submitted, I am amazed by our local students’ talent. Add these winners to the rich selection of pictures by members of St Albans Camera Club and it is a photographic display not to miss

The free exhibition runs at the museum in Hatfield Road until January 4 and is organised by St Albans Camera Club which was formed in 1945 for local people interested in photography.

Steven Else from the club said: “The techniques and cameras have changed a lot since our inception, but the group is still going strong and welcomes people of all ages and skills.

“The photographs in the exhibition reflect the broad range of interests of the club’s members as well as those of students who took part in our competition. Topics include wildlife, the theatre, travel, people, trains and landscape and underwater photography.”
