IDEAS and theories which once only flourished on the fringes of society are now being taken much more seriously, according to writer Damien Thomas at a literary dinner.

The author of Counterknowledge which was published last month was the guest at the English-Speaking Union Herts Branch dinner at Porters Park Golf Club in Radlett. He explained that counterknowledge was misinformation packaged to look like facts but which failed basic empirical tests.

He warned that such misinformation was often spread worldwide through the internet without being thoroughly investigated or challenged and could create political, social or medical disaster.

Among the guests at the evening, which was followed by a book signing, were the Mayor and Mayoress of Hertsmere, Cllr Martin Saunders and his wife Jane.
