Visitors to St Albans Museum + Gallery will see the Assembly Room in a new light as a large scale multi-coloured art installation by Liz West takes over the historic space.

As part of UHArts’ ongoing partnership with St Albans Museum + Gallery, Liz West’s stunning site-specific installation Our Colour Reflection can be seen at the museum from February 6.

With hundreds of mirrors made of coloured acrylic, the installation will reflect light and project colour into the historic interior of the Assembly Room.

Our Colour Reflection creates a conversation between the viewer and the space using more than 700 mirrors of different colours and sizes, set at various heights on the floor.

This striking installation animates the room in a new way and accentuates the Georgian architectural details with coloured light.

Reflecting its surroundings and bathing the room in colour, the installation is playful and engaging, elegant and thoughtful.

Our Colour Reflection was first shown in 2016 at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, which is housed in a converted 19th century church in Scunthorpe.

West researched the history of the building and the connotations it holds as a former place of worship.

She drew inspiration from the former stained glass windows and considered the importance of light within the space.

Having since toured to various and vastly differing locations, the installation is made site-specific for each incarnation.

Now relocating to the wonderful Assembly Room in the St Albans Museum + Gallery, Our Colour Reflection will once again respond to a dramatically different architectural space.

This interplay of architecture, light and colour will constantly change as natural light shifts through the windows of the building.

The stunning former Town Hall which now houses St Albans Museum + Gallery provides a poignant setting for Our Colour Reflection.

Set over three floors, the building boasts a number of restored historic spaces such as the Georgian Assembly Room, Courtroom and Cells alongside newly created galleries that host regularly changing exhibitions and events.

UHArts has had a longstanding and successful partnership with St Albans Museums, providing 20 years of exhibition curation expertise to create innovative and thought-provoking exhibitions that respond to the unique building and its collections.

Our Colour Reflection also marks a poignant continuation of the Colour Snap group exhibition at the University of Hertfordshire’s Art & Design Gallery in Hatfield, which showcases West’s installation Autumn Lights among works by Rhys Coren, Jacob Dahlgren, Anna Mac and Anna Ray.

Curated and produced by the UHArts, the Our Colour Reflection installation is on display in the Assembly Room at St Albans Museum + Gallery from February 6 until Tuesday, March 19.
