Four leading musicians top the bill at a charity concert of classical music at St Albans Cathedral next Saturday, February 27.

The concert is hosted by St Albans Mayor, Cllr Salih Gaygusuz, in aid of his two charities, Keech and Rennie Grove Hospices.

It will feature the work of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and, reflecting the Mayor’s background, the Turkish composer Saygun.

The main performers are acclaimed pianist Gülsin Onay and her son, the violinist Erkin Onay, who will be supported by clarinettist Özlem Çelik and pianist Daniel King Smith.

Gülsin has performed across the world and worked as a soloist with the Royal Philharmonic, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the St Petersburg Philharmonic among others

She has appeared at numerous festivals including Berlin, Warsaw and the Mozartfest Würzburg and is credited with being an exceptional interpreter of Chopin.

Her son Erkin is an associate professor at the Ankara State Conservatory in Turkey and has appeared as a soloist with a wide range of orchestras.

Özlem is principal clarinet in the Samsun State Opera and Ballet in Turkey. She has played as a soloist at concerts around Europe and is now based in London.

Daniel has given concerts all over the world as both soloist and accompanist. His extensive concerto repertoire has led to many performances in the UK and around Europe.

The Mayor said: “I am delighted to be able to stage a concert that features four very gifted soloists. As well as listening to some thrilling music, the audience will also be supporting two charities that do very important work for our community.”

The evening gets underway at 7pm with a champagne and canapés reception, included in the price of the ticket which range from £20 to £30 with concessions available for children and students.

They can be booked on the cathedral’s website where more details of the concert are available.

Alternatively, they can be booked by phone to the Mayor’s Office on 01727 819544.
