An evening of unaccompanied sacred Russian choral music by Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Chesnokov, Labinski, Part, and Stravinsky is being performed by Harpenden Choral Society at the High Street Methodist Church this Saturday.
Also featured on the programme will be Mussorgsky’s song cycle, Songs and Dances of Death, sung by bass soloist Piotr Lempa, and accompanied by pianist Vivien Powles.
Considered to be a masterpiece of the genre, each song in Mussorgsky’s cycle deals with death experiences common in 19th century Russia - child death, death in youth, drunken misadventure and war - in a poetic manner.
