Being part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe has been a long-held ambition for local theatre company Peppermint Muse and it is finally being realised.

For over five years the company, which has a reputation for daring play choices and thought-provoking theatre, has toured London and the Home Counties and regularly performs at The Maltings Arts Theatre in St Albans.

Now its ambition is to be realised – from July 30 until August 25 Peppermint Muse will present three one-person shows at C Nova in the very heart of Edinburgh. Altamont, Lavender Junction and Hyde & Seek will be staged in a building that houses studio theatres and spans seven storeys.

Altamont previewed at the Maltings Theatre in October last year to critical acclaim. Written and performed by John Stenhouse, who is well-known locally, the play is an interpretation of the tragic events that took place at the Rolling Stones 1969 free festival.

Hyde & Seek is a co-production with Edinburgh based Michael Daviot who performed for many years in and around St Albans before returning to Scotland.

Fifteen years after his Fringe First-nominated Ultimate Islands, Michael reunites with Robert Louis Stevenson to explore the idea of ‘self’.

The trio of plays is completed with Lavender Junction, which will preview at the Maltings Arts Theatre on July 17 and 18. A suitcase full of witty recollections and a rich tapestry of characters are revealed against the backdrop of a mysterious land.

Based on real life interviews and research into colonial India, the one-woman show journeys through living, learning and loving.

Peppermint Muse artistic director, Lisa White, said: “It really is a dream come true to be taking our work to Edinburgh. Ever since I was a student at Mountview drama school I wanted to develop original work with my own theatre company and perform at the festival – it has just taken a few more years than I’d planned to make it happen.

“It’s going to be tough competing with thousands of shows in Edinburgh but the opportunity to attract interest from theatre bookers is too good to miss. We are very grateful to St Albans theatre-goers and the Maltings Arts Theatre as well as The Herts Advertiser for their support over the past few years; it definitely gave us the confidence to take a leap into the unknown”

Lavender Junction will be performed at 8pm on Thursday, July 17, and Friday, July 18. Tickets at £10 can be bought online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/ovo or via the box office on 0333 666 3366.
