Young pianist Julian Trevelyan will be battling it out with four other hopefuls in the keyboard category final of the BBC Young Musician competition on BBC 4 next Friday, May 9.

At 15 Julian, who lives in St Albans, is the youngest finalist in his category where he will find himself up against Martin James Bartlett, 17, Ning Hui See, 18, Hayley Parkes, 18, and Isata Kanneh-Mason, 17.

The winners of the five category finals will go through to the semi-finals on Saturday, May 17, with the final taking place at Usher Hall in Edinburgh and broadcast live on Sunday, May 18.

Should Julian go on to win the prestigious competition, he would not be the first 15 year old to do so. Cellist Laura van der Heijden was the same age when she was awarded the title of BBC Young Musician in 2012.

Previous winners and finalists who have played locally include Guy Johnston and Tom Poster.
