Winning entries in an annual poetry-writing competition will be presented at the Abbey Theatre Studio in St Albans next Saturday, July 5.

The Ver Poets event which kicks off at 2pm is free to the public – and to whet the appetite, strawberries and cream and drinks of all kinds and will be on sale in the Abbey Theatre bar.

During the first half of the afternoon there will be a chance to hear around 25 poems from some of the best writers all over Britain.

The winning entries will be presented by this year’s judge, the award-winning poet Clare Pollard, and after the interval she will read from her own work, which includes The Heavy Petting Zoo, The Changeling and most recently an acclaimed translation of Ovid’s Heroines.

A pamphlet of the winning and commended poems will be on sale at the theatre or can be ordered from Ver Poets. The society, based in St Albans, was founded nearly 60 years ago and now has members around the world.
