The choir is putting on A Parliament of Owls which Mr Jenkins set to words by his wife Carol Barrett, herself a prominent composer.

The piece explores the many collective nouns associated with birds and animals and is the centrepiece of an unusual programme of music inspired by the natural world.

The concert, which starts at 7.30pm, is being held in St Peter's Church, St Albans, and the animal theme will continue with Orlando Gibbons' madrigal, The Silver Swan, and the humorous Sweet Suffolk Owl and All Creatures Now.

Tickets are 12 with children and full-time students 1, available from the ticket secretary on 0845 658 8982, from the St Albans tourist information centre or via the choir's website www.stalbanschamberchoir.org.uk
