YOUNG local organist Robert Dixon will be giving the next recital in the series organised by the New School of Organ Studies in Marlborough Road Methodist Church on Tuesday, July 23.

Robert is the Senior Organ Scholar of Jesus College, Cambridge, where he accompanies and occasionally directs the two college choirs in their busy schedule.

He was awarded a Foundation Scholarship at Jesus College and has just graduated with a starred first in Theology

Although a native of St Albans, Robert was previously the Organ Scholar of Gloucester Cathedral. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists aged 19 in July 2010 and is currently studying with Gordon Stewart.

He has performed in venues including St Paul’s Cathedral, York Minster, Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Royal Albert Hall – as well as at locations in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and the United States of America.

More recently he has given recitals at King’s and St John’s Colleges in Cambridge, and in Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester Cathedrals. He was awarded the Brian Runnett Prize for organ playing by St John’s College, Cambridge in February 2013.

Robert has also played on four CDs, raising several hundreds of pounds for charity in the process. A CD with the Choirs of Jesus College of music for Remembrance entitled War and Peace is due to be published shortly.

His most unusual performance to date remains playing the oboe on The Tweenies – at the tender age of 11.

At the St Albans church on Tuesday, Robert will be performing works by Elgar, Percy Whitlock, Thomas Tomkins, J.S. Bach and Widor.

The recital begins at 12.30pm and refreshments are available before and afterwards. Admission is free, with a retiring collection in aid of the New School of Organ Studies and the church.
