New Roots finalist Sophie Crawford joins St Albans-based duo na-mara for the opening concert of the new season from Folk at the Maltings.
Vocalist and guitarist Paul McNamara joins Rob Garcia on mandolin, mandola, guitar and vocals to make up na-mara, a Celtic-inspired act whose repertoire includes self-penned songs in traditional style on contemporary and historical topics, traditional British pieces and translations of works from the Breton, French and Quebecois traditions.
As close friends of the International Brigade Memorial Trust, they have performed their own songs about the Spanish Civil War at numerous events commemorating the commitment of Britons who went to fight fascism in Spain in the 1930s.
Opening the concert will be New Roots finalist Sophie Crawford, an actor musician from Stoke Newington in London. After being the first woman to play the part of the Song Woman, formerly Man, in the West End production of War Horse from 2014-2015, she went on to write the music for the folk musical The Dead Moon which she toured with Troupe Theatre Company.
She plays a blend of traditional music and her own songs.
