Dark and murky deeds in a remote, lonely house on the marshes of the Thames Estuary are at the heart of Ladies in Retirement, the next production by Wheathampstead Dramatic Society.
It can be seen at 8pm each night in the village Memorial Hall in Marford Road, from next Thursday to Saturday, 19 to 21.
Set towards the end of the 19th century, Ladies in Retirement, written by Edward Percy and Reginald Denham, is based on the true story of the death of retired actress, Leonora Fiske, and her eccentric house guests, the Creed sisters, who are clearly involved in her disappearance.
An eerie moonlit pantomime murder is staged by their nephew to entrap the real culprit before he becomes the next victim.
Director Robin Langer said: “The cast are enjoying a return to a period play after several 20th century plays and are revelling in the darkness and suspense of Ladies in Retirement.”
