Frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a villainess will take to the stage of the Public Halls when Harpenden Light Operatic Society (HLOS) put on Thoroughly Modern Millie early next month.

Set in the Roaring 20s, the musical classic takes audiences back to the Jazz Age when ‘modern’ girls were bobbing their hair, raising their hemlines, entering the workforce and rewriting the rules of love.

Winner of six Tony Awards including best musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie was the 2002 season’s most heralded new show on Broadway. Set in New York City in 1922, it tells the story of young Millie Dillmount from Kansas who comes to New York in search of a new life.

Her grand plan is to find a job as a secretary to a wealthy man and marry him. But her plan goes completely awry. The owner of her dingy hotel kidnaps young girls to sell to the Far East, her wealthy boss is slow in proposing marriage and the man she actually falls in love with doesn’t have a dime to his name - or so he tells her.

The show can be seen at 7.30pm from Tuesday, October 4, to Saturday, October 8. with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.

Prices range from £9 to £15 and concessions are available on Tuesday evening and Saturday afternoon, available online at www.hlos.ticketsource.co.uk, by telephone on 07817 331150 or email hlostickets@live.co.uk. Group bookings are available for all performances.

On Thursday evening the audience is encouraged to come dressed in 1920s gear. HLOS will be taking pictures and there is a chance to win tickets for their next production, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, in March.
