Acclaimed actor Timothy West will be hosting an evening of Wilfred Owen’s First World War poems and letters, with musical interludes, at the University of Herts’ Weston Auditorium this Sunday. (30)

Entitled The Pity of War and in association with the Imperial War Museum, the evening runs from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and will feature Owen’s 1917 and 1918 output which reveals his courage and humanity as he endured experiences and conditions from which many of his fellow soldiers never fully recovered.

The programme will be accompanied by sonatas from Claude Debussy, Edward Elgar and Leos Janacek, performed by violinist Matthew Trussler and pianist Martin Roscoe.

Timothy West is particularly acclaimed for his power and command on the classical stage as well as his appearances on radio, television and film.

* The war theme continues at the University with an exhibition of photographs by Melanie Friend running until January 31.

Entitled The Home Front, it explores links between militarism, marketing and entertainment in a set of three related photographic series that explore the civilian experience of war with particular focus on public air shows taking place at RAF bases and in the skies above seaside resorts.

Admission to the exhibition at the Art and Design Gallery in College Lane, Hatfield, is free and Melanie will be talking ab out her work at 7pm next Thursday, December 4, at an artist’s reception which is open to all.
