INTERNATIONAL theatre organ star Len Rawle, who built his Herts home around a Wurlitzer, is appearing at St Albans Organ Theatre on Saturday.

Born in South Wales, he studied piano at the London College of Music, progressed to organ and in the 1960s, his parents installed a theatre pipe organ at their home.

That rare experience of playing a Wurlitzer at home led to Len acquiring the huge four keyboard, 25-rank instrument from the Empire Cinema in London's Leicester Square and it now plays in specially-designed chambers with sound-baffling concrete walls 18 inches thick under an 11-inch ceiling in Chorleywood.

As well as concerts worldwide, teaching and making recordings, Len became musical director for Yamaha in the seventies, designing and presenting organs and establishing more than 100 music schools which have turned out many thousands of successful musicians.

The concert at the organ theatre in Camp Road starts at 7.45pm and some seats at 6.50 are still available by phoning 01727 768652.
