A rare opportunity to see Jefferson Starship who are celebrating their 40th anniversary is on offer at the Alban Arena next Monday, January 20.

Direct from the USA they will be performing their greatest hits in the show which begins at 7.30pm.

One of the most iconic rock bands in America in the sixties, headlining the original Woodstock Festival in 1969, Jefferson Airplane was the first San Francisco band to sign a major record deal.

They paved the way for the likes of Janis Joplin and Grateful Dead and when Airplane parted company, Paul Kantner created Jefferson Starship which has enjoyed four decades of huge success on the American rock music scene.

The line-up includes founder members Paul Kantner and David Freiberg and features Grammy Award nominee Cathy Richardson in the vocal role made famous by Grace Slick.

Comedy duo Punt and Dennis are performing a near sold-out show at the Arena at 8pm next Wednesday, January 22.

The pair are living the rock n roll dream – cruising the contraflow lanes, following the one-way systems, unwrapping the pasties and sipping the service station coffees of Britain in their quest to find somewhere to park vaguely near a theatre in town.

n Acclaimed film Le Weekend is showing at the Arena at 7.30pm next Tuesday, January 21.

Nick and Meg Burrows (Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan) are a married academic couple, advancing in age and tension. To mark their 30th wedding anniversary, the two embark on a trip to the place they honeymooned three decades ago: Paris.

Hoping to rejuvenate their marriage, the couple arrive in Paris but things do not go to plan. Eventually, the two bump into Morgan (Jeff Goldblum), a successful former student of Nick’s, and attend a dinner party of his that ultimately opens up a new view of life and love for the ageing couple.

A contemporary take on Oscar Wilde’s story of the same name,The Selfish Giant (15) is showing at the Arena at 11am next Saturday, January 25.

Thirteen year old Arbor (Conner Chapman) and his best friend Swifty (Shaun Thomas) have been excluded from school and are outsiders in their own neighbourhood. The two boys meet Kitten (Sean Gilder), a local scrap dealer and, wandering their town with just a horse and a cart, they begin collecting scrap metal for him.

Swifty has a natural gift with horses while Arbor is a brilliant businessman – keen to impress, and make some money, just like Kitten. However, Kitten favours Swifty, leaving Arbor feeling hurt and excluded, driving a wedge between the boys.
