Luton city centre is preparing for its biggest ever outdoor festival, with spellbinding performances from local, national and international artists.
Imagine Luton, a free two day festival held in the city centre this weekend, will be celebrating the town’s cultural diversity and welcoming the start of summer with an array of exceptional performances for the whole family to enjoy.
From June 24-25, theatre, dance and circus acts will be exhibiting mesmeric displays including acrobatics, dance troops, stilt walkers, a human jukebox, a brass band and many more, with some, like The Flycycle and The Submercycle, being a new concept for spectators.
Gavin O’Brien, chair of Luton BID said: “Imagine Luton is set to be the town centre’s biggest ever outdoor festival and one of the most significant events on the local calendar so we are thrilled to be an official sponsor. We are confident it will be a hugely successful and enjoyable experience that will bring hordes of extra visitors into the town.”
In celebration of the town’s home grown talent, many of the performers are Luton residents including Next Generation Youth Company, Full House Theatre, House of Absolut, Kadam and The Basement Bunch- All of which involve local schools, with 100 students participating in performances.
Not only will the weekend festival share some of Luton’s most talented acts, but also the town’s cultural diversity.
Kadam dance and music artist, Sanjeevini Dutta, explained her performance: “The Rose and the Bulbul [performed by Kadam] celebrates friendship across cultures, a story for Luton. Through the Imagine Luton Festival, Luton holds a mirror to how it sees itself; reinventing its own image through the festival.”
Gerry Taylor, corporate director for Public Health Luton Borough Council, said: “We hope the festival will become an annual event as it very much supports our recently produced 10-year strategic vision for arts, culture and creative industries in which cultural events form a key part of the ambition to achieve City of Culture status in 2025, along with celebrating the town’s creative talent and providing local people with quality arts and cultural activities.”
