THE colourful streets of New York City and its Guys and Dolls come to Harpenden next week when Harpenden Light Operatic Society (HLOS) bring their second production of 2011 to the stage.
Opening on Monday, Guys and Dolls will light up the stage at Harpenden’s Public Halls.
The hit musical tells the story of Nathan Detroit – a gambling guy – who bets the high-rolling gambler Sky Masterson that he will not be able to persuade Missionary Sister Sarah Brown to accompany him on a trip to Cuba. While Sky attempts to charm Sarah, Nathan tries to fight off his long-suffering fiancee, Miss Adelaide, who is determined to straighten out his crooked life.
Linda Dyne is returning to HLOS as director and the society welcomes Izzy Bates, who has moved from the stage and into the orchestra pit, as their musical director. Soprano Alison Langer, who is currently studying at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, takes the lead role of Sarah Brown and Pete Town plays gambler, Sky Masterson.
The classic musical is regarded as one of the greatest in the history of American musical theatre and first opened on Broadway in 1950, running for 1,200 performances. The film version of the musical starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra topped the box office in 1955 and won eight Tony awards.
Performances are at 7.45pm from Monday to Saturday with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets can be purchased from hlostickets@live.co.uk or 07817 331150. Prices range from 9-14.
