Gun Format: PS2 Price: £39.99 DESCRIBED as the Western version of Grand Theft Auto, Gun is a blend of action and story with a non-linear edge. You play Colton White, a cowboy who works with his dad hunting livestock. He accompanies his father to the Morning Star Steam Boat and, as you would expect, things quickly go wrong for Colton. In typical Western fashion you are soon left with only the desire for revenge over those who have wronged you. To aid you in your story is a small arsenal of weapons and a deadly slow-motion mode. The first thing you notice about Gun is that while you are given the freedom to explore and do as you please, the sub-missions are often tedious and make you focus on the main plot. Sadly, the main plot is rather short and so you are left feeling slightly cheated. Having said that, there were several times where I felt the game was dragging on and becoming too repetitive. Furthermore the attention to detail is lacking and gives the impression that more could have been done. Not that I should recommend it in a game, but you cannot murder someone important to the plot, no matter how hard you try. Despite offloading several shotgun shells in the face of Colton's dad, the only reaction was a muffled "ouch". Similarly it is very difficult to be killed and at one point I found I was trying to protect a bridge with close to 15 flaming arrows protruding from my limbs. Gun is a fun game but after the brilliance of Red Dead Revolver it is only average in the Western genre MAT BURTON Graphics: 3.5/5 Longevity: 3.5/5 Playability: 4/5 Originality: 2.5/5 Enjoyment: 4/5
