THE opening night of Broken Glass, the next production by St Albans drama group the Company of Ten, coincides with Holocaust Memorial Day. The Arthur Miller play starts its run in the Abbey Theatre Studio at Westminster Lodge tomorrow (Friday which is Holocaust Memorial Day. There is a display in the theatre foyer about the play and particularly the Kristallnacht - Night of the Broken Glass - where Jewish businesses were attacked and which is at the heart of the play. The Kristallnacht is the trigger for the play which centres on the Gellburgs, a Jewish couple living in Brooklyn in 1938 and the mystery surrounding the sudden paralysis of Mrs Gellburg. Four years ago, the Company of Ten also chose another play, Kindertransport, because of its links with the Holocaust and performed it in the Abbey Theatre Studio at the same time of year. The current foyer exhibition, which features photocopies of various publications of the time, has been put together by Broken Glass director, Angela Stone, and Company of Ten members Rory Byrne and Grace Hiscocks. Broken Glass runs until Saturday, February 4, and tickets are available from the box office on 01727 857861.
