THERE'S a double dose of comic opera at the Maltings Arts Theatre this weekend, promising an evening of mix-ups, misunderstandings and music.

Arthur Sullivan's Cox and Box tells the story of a wily landlord who lets out his flat to two tenants simultaneously, relying on the fact that printer Mr Box works all night and hatter Mr Cox works all day.

Things tick nicely along until Mr Box gets a day's holiday and meets his unexpected flat mate, resulting in a classic Victorian farce which is brimful of catchy tunes.

This lively production is followed by Jacques Offenbach's opera Here Comes The Groom, in a new translation by Bob Niblett and Jean Kestner.

Following a row with her husband Martin, new bride Susan refuses to go down to her wedding reception, and stays in her room with friend and bridesmaid Rosalind. Events take a comic turn when composer Julian enters the room via the chimney and all sorts of fun ensues.

These two one-act operas can be seen on Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24 at 8pm. Tickets cost 11 (8 concessions) and both productions are suitable for all ages. Tickets can be purchased from the box office on 01727 844222.
