THREE members of the musically talented Devine Family, will take the stage at 8pm tomorrow (Friday) at the Maltings Arts Theatre in St Albans.

The concert, part of a monthly series, is also the final event of this year’s St Albans Folk Festival.

The Devine Family comprise dad John, mum Caz and their son, Joe.

John is well-known not only as a musician playing in a number of bands but also as a teacher and producer of Irish music. He now works as a development officer for Comhaltas, the Irish Musicians Association. He is particularly known for his playing of the uilleann pipes but is a multi-instrumentalist also playing keyboards, whistles, vocals, drums and percussion.

Caz plays the saxophone, an unusual instrument in Irish music, as well as whistles, bass and percussion and Joe provides the string section on tenor banjo, guitar and bass.

The trio play original songs of love, loss and hope mixed with classic Irish songs and traditional Irish music.

The concert will open with New Roots 2011 finalist, Ollie King, whose influences are largely English. The songs he sings are from the English tradition or new songs written in that tradition.

He sings either accompanied or with guitar accompaniment and his influences include Nic Jones, The Watersons, Spiers & Boden and Chris Wood. He is also a dance musician, playing the melodeon and dancing with several morris dance groups.
