BELLS will ring out at four St Albans churches on Saturday to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Hertford County Association of Change Ringers.

Around 100 ringers will be ringing on the six bells of St Stephen's, eight bells of St Michael's, 10 bells of St Peter's and 12 bells at St Albans Abbey.

An evensong service will follow at the Abbey at 4pm "flavoured" with bellringing and featuring the bellringers' hymn and a demonstration of expert change ringing on handbells during the service.

The county association held its first meeting in St Albans in October 1884 and nowadays the bells in most towers in and around the city are rung for services on Sunday by unpaid ringers.
