ALAN Ayckbourn’s native Scarborough and London’s Docklands are worlds apart as the playwright discovered when he bought a pied a terre in the latter.

While everyone knows everyone else’s business up north, nobody knows anybody in Docklands – and it is that sense of anonymity and the threat of it which lies behind FlatSpin which is being performed at the Abbey Theatre in St Albans from tomorrow.

In a Docklands flat, out-of-work actress Rosie is a temporary flat-sitter where the owner is absent – if she exists at all.

In what is a clear nod to the Hitchcock thriller North by Northwest, she has been created as part of a sting but who by and why is a drug dealer posing as an Avon Lady?

Flatspin, which is the new production by the Company of Ten, runs until next Saturday, February 19, and as there is no performance on Monday, February 14, there is a Sunday matinee at 2.30pm instead. Tickets are available from the box office on 01727 857861 or online at www.abbeytheatre.org.uk
