TWO masterpieces of the 18th Century are being performed by Harpenden Choral Society when it opens its 36th season next Saturday, November 20.

The choir will be performing Mozart’s Vesperae solenes de Confessore and Michael Haydn’s Requiem in C in the concert at 7.30pm at Harpenden High Street Methodist Church.

Brother of the more famous Joseph, Michael Haydn was hugely respected and influential as a composer and his Requiem Mass was so highly regarded that his brother asked for it to be played at his own funeral.

The programme is a rare opportunity to listen first hand to Michael Haydn’s work together with Mozart’s who was inspired and influenced by the former. Mozart’s Vesperae Solennes de Confessore stands amongst his most inspired, inventive and profound works.

The choir, conducted by John Andrews, will be joined by The King’s Sinfonietta with soloists Olivia Robinson, soprano, Serena Kay, mezzo soprano, Samuel Boden, tenor and Edmund Connolly, baritone.
