With a Spitfire flying overhead, cannons, fireworks, parachute display team the Red Devils dropping in, and a full classical concert, this year’s Battle Proms at Hatfield House promises to be the best yet.

The Battle Proms is a firm diary fixture at Hatfield House, with up to 8,000 people attending the concert each year.

Since their first concert at Battle Abbey, East Sussex, in 1997, Battle Proms organisers have been treating their audiences to a heady mix of sublime classical music, carefully choreographed Spitfire and cavalry displays, dramatic cannon fire and stunning firework finales.

As the series celebrates its 20th anniversary, the Battle Proms will once again return to the historic Queen Elizabeth Oak Field at Hatfield House on Saturday, July 15.

Organised by JSL Productions, the ever-popular picnic proms takes much of its historical inspiration from the Napoleonic Wars.

As well as staging a colourful skill-at-arms cavalry display in full regalia, the concert is also the only place in the world you can see Beethoven’s Battle Symphony performed as he intended – with 193 live firing cannons providing a thunderous percussion. It’s a sight and sound worth seeing.

And in a very special addition to the 20th anniversary programme, the Red Devils – the Parachute Regiment and British Army’s official display team – will perform their daring freefall demonstration in the skies above the Hatfield concert.

And if this wasn’t excitement enough for a summer’s afternoon, Battle Proms promoters have worked closely with the Grace Spitfire team over the years to create one of the most carefully choreographed Spitfire displays you are likely to catch this summer.

So much more than just a fly past, this display has the iconic World War Two plane dancing through the sky to the opening pieces of the orchestral performance by the 60-piece New English Concert Orchestra.

Conducted by Douglas Coombes, the full orchestral programme then takes centre stage for the rest of the evening, complete with a stunning performance by star soprano Denise Leigh.

The concert will include Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture accompanied by live cannon fire.

Hosted by BBC presenter Pam Rhodes, the evening will culminate in a flag-waving, sing-a-long ‘Last Night of the Proms’ style finale as a spectacular firework display lights up the sky.

To celebrate Battle Proms’ special anniversary, the Welwyn Hatfield Times has teamed up with the people behind the concert to offer six lucky readers the chance to win two tickets each to the July 15 extravaganza.
