A free concert of music showcasing the combined power of a 10-part brass ensemble, percussion and the St Albans Cathedral organ is being held on Bank Holiday Monday.
Cambridge-based ensemble Prime Brass make their third visit to the cathedral to perform under the direction of Paul Trepte, director of music at Ely Cathedral. Their programme includes works by Strauss, Purcell, Dupré and Françaix.
The organ will be put through its paces by Tom Winpenny, assistant master of the music at the cathedral.
Tom said: “We are delighted to welcome again the acclaimed group Prime Brass to perform at the cathedral, under the direction of Paul Trepte. The programme explores a huge range of styles from the 18th Century through to the 20th Century. “This is a rare chance to hear some majestic and inspiring works which were composed to demonstrate the might of combining brass instruments with the thrilling sound of a cathedral organ.”
The concert, which is approximately 50 minutes long, gets underway at 1pm and is not suitable for small children. There will be a retiring collection and further information can be obtained from the cathedral information desk on 01727 860780.
