A VARIED programme of Advent music from the Renaissance and the modern era is being performed by Carillon Chamber Choir next Saturday, November 28.

The concert, which starts at 7.30pm, will be conducted by one of Carillon's long-standing guest conductors, Andrew Parnell.

It will include motets by William Byrd, Rorate Coeli, Civitas sancti tui and Vigilate and Orlando Gibbons' Hosanna to the Son of David and This is the Record of John.

Modern works will include Seven Magnificat Antiphons by the Estonian composer Arvo Part and A Spotless Rose and the rarely-heard Clarinet Sonata by Herbert Howells in which Andrew Parnell's wife, Koren Wilmer, will be the soloist.

The contemporary composer David Bednall is represented by his Benedictus from the Wells Service for choir and organ.

The choir is also performing the ever-popular Remember, O thou Man by Arthur Oldham and Jesus Christ the Apple Tree by Elizabeth Poston as well as a lesser-known carol by Peter Hurford, Christ hath a Garden walled around.

To round off the concert at St Peter's Church in St Albans, Carillon will perform Andrew Parnell's arrangement of the ancient carol, Come, Thou Redeemer of the Earth.

Tom Winpenny, assistant master of the music at St Albans Abbey, will be accompanying Carillon in some items and playing organ solos by J S Bach and Kenneth Leighton.
