A CONCERT is being given in Harpenden on Saturday by the acclaimed St Albans Abbey Girls Choir. It is being held at 7.30pm at St John's Church and the choir will be conducted by Simon Johnson with James Davy on the organ and John Young on trumpet. The programme includes Kenneth Leighton's Easter Sequence and music by Poulenc, Hildegard, Monteverdi, Bach and Rheinberger. The choir was formed in January 1996 and has just celebrated its tenth birthday. Although it was formed for the office of Evensong on Wednesdays and Fridays, the choir has developed an ever more dynamic role, both within and outside the Abbey, taking on more service work in busy seasons and having become increasingly in demand to give concerts both at home and abroad. The choir have performed Evensong on Radio Three and appeared twice on Songs of Praise. They have also made three CD recordings and in the last few years have undertaken a complete performance of Bach's Christmas Oratorio, sung to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. ää Tickets for the concert are £12 for adults and £5 for children and include interval refreshments. They are available from 01582 763966 and the concert is in aid of the Light for Life foundation which improves the lives of disabled adults in Bulgaria.
