Wry observation of the class system enlivened by a dash of Hollywood glamour makes up the next production of Wheathampstead Dramatic Society.
The company is putting on Noel Coward’s Relative Values at Wheathampstead Memorial Hall from next Thursday to Saturday, October 15-17.
The year is 1951 and the setting is a minor stately home in Kent where the Marshwood family, still reeling from the property’s wartime transformation into a billeting station for an unruly company of WAAFs, are gamely struggling against the rising tide of post-war social change and the general unwillingness of the younger generation to embark on a career of domestic service.
Family and servants are awaiting the arrival of an American actress who is about to become the second wife of the Earl of Marshwood. But all is not as it seems, as lies, secrets and unexpected arrivals bring Hollywood-style drama to a quiet corner of rural England.
