REGULAR performers from St Albans drama group OVO join forces with Act Now theatre school to put on Our Country’s Good over the next 10 days.
The play by Timberlake Wertenbaker tells the true story of the first group of convicts and Royal Marines sent to Australia in 1789.
Ralph Clark, a young married lieutenant, is directing rehearsals of the first play ever to be staged in that country – a performance of Farquhar’s restoration comedy The Recruiting Officer. With only two copies of the text, a cast of convicts and a leading lady about to be hanged, conditions are far from ideal.
The play, which debuted at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 1988, and is adapted from the Thomas Keneally novel The Playmaker. It quickly became a modern classic, mixing dark and disturbing drama with regular flashes of black humour to create an ultimately uplifting tale of the redemptive power of theatre.
It can be seen at OVO’s Pudding Lane theatre off Chequer Street at 8pm until next Saturday, October 23, with no performances on October 17, 18 or 19. Tickets at �12.50 with concessions �7.50 are available from the box office on 07807 521436 or online at www.ovo.org.uk
