Dutch organist Bernard Winsemius is giving a recital on the St Albans International Organ Festival’s own organ in St Saviour’s Church this Saturday, March 19.
The programme consists entirely of music by J S Bach but with a twist as many of the pieces are arrangements of other pieces, both by Bach himself and others, including Winsemius.
The recital, which starts at 5.30pm, opens with a piece arranged by Benjamin Cooke, an English baroque composer, which combines Bach’s Prelude, Trio and Fugue in B flat major with the Finale from his Sonata for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord, the various parts connected by transitional music of unknown origin.
Also featured is Bach’s Capriccio, a piece originally written for the harpsichord in which the composer depicts in music, the various emotions felt when saying goodbye to a beloved brother.
Following this is a Harpsichord Concerto arranged for organ and two Bach chorales arranged for organ by Bernard Winsemius.
The recital ends with a chance to hear four movements from Bach’s Art of the Fugue which are rarely performed on the organ.
Entry to the recital is free with a retiring collection in aid of The International Organ Festival Society. After the performance the audience will have an opportunity to meet the soloist at a reception in the church.
