Redbourn Golf Club round-up

THE junior golfers of Redbourn Golf Club saw off their senior counterparts for the fourth time in five years to win the annual Eric Russell Trophy last weekend.

The event, named after founder-member Eric Russell who passed away 14 years ago, saw a total of 126 matches played over the two days as 14 teams of at least 10 players competed in a Ryder Cup-style contest.

It proved an extremely tight affair as the whole club came out to support the competition, which went down to the wire with just half a point separating the juniors and joint runners-up: The Sultans of Swing and Captain’s Fossil’s XI.

The victorious junior team was made up of George Mudd, Jake Norman, Harry Woor, Conor O’Grady, Alex Williams, Jack Stevens, George Denton, Kumar Starkie, Alex Copson and Jamie Woor.

Ian McDowell, Redbourn Golf Club general manager, said: “This was the 13th time the competition has been run and it has become one of the most popular events in the club year, which was demonstrated by the 180 people who were here for the final matches and enjoying the hog roast staged following the event.

“A great deal of credit must be given to the two former Redbourn captains Nick Jones and Bob Taylor and their respective wives Carol and Lin, who initiated the event all those years ago. As well as playing in the event they still look after much of the administration and scoring over the weekend.”

Played over the Ver Course at Redbourn – part of BGL Golf, the UK’s leading golf course owner and operator – the competition is extremely popular among club members both young and old, and always raises thousands of pounds for charity.

This year the event raised 2,000 for the captains’ chosen charity for 2012, the Pepper Foundation, a charity that helps fund home care for seriously ill children within the Herts, Beds and Bucks communities.
