Yates crowned National champion

Yates takets U23 800m Gold medal

FORMER St Albans School pupil Lucy Yates became the UK National U23 800m Champion at Bedford last Sunday.

After qualifying from the heat on Saturday she took the gold with an electrifying burst from 200m out that decimated the field and saw her home in 2.07.84 - just short of her personal best. This was even more remarkable as she had just flown in from the USA a couple of days before where she is on a full running scholarship at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City.

Having had a great season to date in America, where she qualified for the NCAA finals in Eugene, Oregon, Lucy was delighted to beat off the challenge of the girl who beat her at Gateshead in her final English Schools event. Yates’ aim is the 2012 Olympics and this win gives a great boost to her confidence.
