St Albans Hockey Club striker Ellie Watton was the double goal hero in England’s opening games at the women’s hockey Champions Trophy in Argentina at the weekend.
Watton scored the equalising goal in the opening game against Australia on Saturday, which England narrowly lost 2-1. She then repeated the same feat against Germany on Sunday in a 1-1 draw. Watton, winning her 31st and 32nd international caps and playing in attack alongside St Albans team-mate Hannah Macleod, was one of England’s senior players who made huge contributions of her own to both games.
Macleod and Watton both joined the Tangerines this summer. Macleod is the club’s ladies’ 1sts head coach and Watton is the hockey development officer, which has seen her conduct youth masterclasses and organise the holiday camps at Oaklands.
