COLNEY Heath hit form on Saturday to sink St Margaretsbury and boost their bid for safety in the Premier Division.

The Magpies were reinforced with the signings of Anthony Muthusamy and Lee Rickard from London Colney. Both came in for starts with Muthusamy at the back alongside Lee Gorrell, manager Johnstone and bright young left back Mark Lawford. In midfield the mercurial Greg Deacon was tasked with taking the attack to the visitors. Rickard sat deep, protecting his new back four, while Gary Simmons and Neil Jordan were included to supply ball to Deacon.

Deacon conjured up the opening goal with a smashing volley on 23 minutes after some spellbinding work from the athletic Ashley Aimakhu.

The Magpies were dominant and Jordan and Deacon combined well to find Aimakhu and he laid the ball on for Jamie Hazel to strike with relish over the visiting goalkeeper for 2-0.

The leg work for the Blueboys was done by the returning Rickard, who staked his claim for a regular place in the side. Muthusamy, a hit down the road at Cotlandswick until the departure of boss Vince Rickard, enjoyed an excellent return to Colney Heath exhibiting his organisational skills to keep the visiting attack bay.

The magic was not reserved for the St Margaretsbury penalty box as goalkeeper Tom Blackman, who saved a penalty at Biggleswade on Wednesday, repeated the trick, diving to keep the ball out.

Johnstone felt the save came at a crucial time for the Magpies, denying St Margaretsbury a vital strike back and giving Colney Heath the platform to win 2-0. The manager said: "Tom didn't have many saves to make but he came and collected everything. The penalty save was important because at 2-1 they would have been pushing for a point. Tom has come of age. He has been the number one goalkeeper this season and is becoming more confident and dominant. With two penalty saves in two games, his confidence is sky high at the moment.

"I was pleased with Lee Rickard who left in difficult circumstances but he came back in with the right attitude. With Lee and Neil Jordan in there, we have a tough midfield. Gary Simmons is more of a ball player and Greg Deacon's work rate was superb.

"It was nice for Jamie Hazel to get his first goal since returning from injury and Ashley Aimakhu has come from the reserves and is definitely a first-team player now."

Jake Parratt is set to join Premier Division rivals Welwyn Garden City after the Citizens slapped in a seven-day approach for the young striker.

l In a thrilling Premier Division clash on Tuesday night, Colney Heath stormed into a 3-1 lead at Cockfosters only to go down 4-3.

Nicky Page put the home side ahead but strikes from Greg Deacon, Ashley Aimakhu and Martin Standen powered the Magpies into a great position. Cockfosters then struck a goal back through Michael Casey and, in the final five minutes, striker O'Connor and Dave Pigden netted to make the final score 4-3 to the hosts.

l On Wednesday, February 6, the Magpies were stunned by a late goal as Biggleswade Town completed a dramatic recovery win.

With manager Craig Johnstone including himself at right back and Martin Standen back from Herts Senior County League Premier Division title chasers Hatfield Town for the game, the Magpies looked strong. Standen lined up in the hole behind strike duo Jamie Hazel and Ashley Aimakhu.

Early on Colney Heath conceded a penalty and former London Colney goalkeeper Tom Blackman sprawled to his right to make a sensational save.

The Magpies capitalised when Neil Jordan showed his guile, delivering a crafty corner which was powered into the net by Aimakhu as he soared high above the flagging defence. It was a first senior goal for the Magpies from the prolific former St Albans City Youth marksman.

The rampant Magpies looked on a high and Standen had a low drive saved before the break.

Tom Dickie came on as a half time substitution at right back and the fresh legs helped inspire the Magpies to continue their assault. Dickie fed Deacon who surged to the byeline and, with a telescopic leg, hooked the ball back for Standen to slide home for 2-0.

It was party time for boss Johnstone but not for long as the bubble burst. Dickie was unable to clear in his box and Dan Heron smashed home a pivotal goal. Just one minute after home hopes were extinguished, they were suddenly alive again.

The mesmeric Jake Weedon fired home for 2-2 and, as Johnstone picked up his bags to trudge off accepting a point, Weedon was there again in injury time to deal a crushing blow to the battling visitors, sealing a 3-2 win for the hosts.
