Verulamians moved up to seventh in Herts/Middlesex 1 after a commanding second half saw them past Royston.
Vees led by two points at half-time, 7-5, but scored four tries in the second period to win 29-5.
For 60 minutes the game was characterised by both sides’ unwillingness to concede ground, tenacious defence of the try-lines, horrendous lapses in concentration in positional field kicking, yellow cards - there were five in total - and poor decision making with ball in hand.
Royston cancelled out David Coyle’s converted try to trail at the break and for 20 minutes of the second half neither side gave an inch.
In the last 15 minutes, Vees’ tough tackling eventually wore down Royston and then were able to notch up 22 more points to run out comfortable winners.
