Trialists to be given their chance at Royston

Saints boss still on the hunt for recognised full-backs

ST ALBANS City boss David Howell will use tonight’s friendly at Royston Town to take a closer look at those players trying to earn a deal with the club.

Howell has been busy assembling his squad over the last week with 10 players signing Southern Premier Division forms with the Saints but the City boss still has a number of gaps in his squad to fill ahead of the new campaign particularly at full-back where the club is lacking both a recognised right and left-back.

The 52-year-old cast his eye over Kwasi Frempong and Mohamed Yusuf during Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to FC Gabala and the pair are expected to be given another chance tonight at Royston to impress the Saints’ coaching team.

“It’s still about trying to find the right players to put in the right positions to get the right mould and the right mix so that’s what these matches are for,” explained Howell.

“We’ve been together, probably for a fortnight, maybe just a bit over, and there are some players that came in today that haven’t even trained - James Bent for example – and there’s other players that have only trained a couple of times. There’s players that weren’t available today and so we’re just really trying to get to know each other and the lads are trying to find out each other’s strengths and weaknesses and that’s an ongoing process.”

Howell says he isn’t interested in results at present – only in the performances his players produce and he declared himself happy with the way his side acquitted themselves against Tony Adams’ Gabala side on Sunday.

Howell added: “Speaking to Tony Adams before the game he was saying they hadn’t scored (on their UK tour) and I said we’ll you’ll probably scores against us today because for me it’s more about the performance than the result and I’ll be telling my players to be positive, look to attack and not to worry about the fact they may leave someone one-on-one or two-on-two. I think that showed and it made for an open game really.

“I thought our lads tired as expected towards the end but you don’t mind if they give everything and they work hard which I think they did.”
