ST Albans Centurions Under 14s made a positive start in defeat when they travelled to Croydon Hurricanes for the opening match of their season.

The Hurricanes side contained several top prospects with scholarships with top Rugby League outfit Harlequins, while St Albans introduced many new players to the sport.

The Cents battled hard and coach Shane Rampling was pleased with the efforts of his squad. He said: "Hurricanes and West London are favourites for the title and I always knew this was going to be a tough fixture. The boys handled themselves well, but were lacking the rugby league nous that the Croydon boys had. I think it will take a few weeks for the boys to get up to speed but am confident that we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season, come play off time.

"I was particularly impressed with Judd Otene, Daniel Hedison, James Boggis and Aaron Gregg. The attitude was spot on and the boys heads never dropped."
