TOM LEWIS got off to an encouraging start as he was included in the England team for the Boys Home Internationals which started at Royal County Down on Tuesday, with Wales being their first opponents.

The Welwyn Garden City teenager, partnered by Jonathan Ball, were a hole ahead in the foursomes playing the 18th but with both teams missing the green, the Welsh recovered for a tap-in putt to win the hole and gain a half. In the singles Lewis ran out the winner after a tight match by one hole.

Losing the foursomes 31/2 to 11/2, England hit back to beat Wales 7-3 in the singles and 81/2-61/2 overall.

"We got a fright in the foursomes, but we knew we had a good enough team to win," said Lewis.

l AFTER a series of missed cuts, former Herts champion Sam Little found his form in the Russian Open, ending the final round with a seven under par 65 for a share of ninth place.

He had opened with rounds of 70 69 70, to finish 14 under par on 274, seven strokes behind winner Mikael Lundberg of Sweden. He picked up 25,500 to total 180,000 euros for the season and lie 108th in the European Tour order of merit.
