Batchwood Tennis Academy’s Oliver Tarvet beat Roan Johns in straight sets to be crowned National Champion at the weekend.

With the match delicately poise at 2-2 in the first set the St Albans player, who was the number two seed, survived four game points before converting a break point of his own to take the fifth game.

Once in front he held his nerve well and produced some sensational tennis to break twice more in the second set to secure his first National Championship title.

Tarvet was not the only Batchwood player at the U10 Nike Winter Tour Finals.

Batchwood Tennis Academy boasted 3 of the 16 players in the boys 10U Nike Winter National Tour Finals at the weekend. Andre Raath and Callum Cawsey also graced the courts at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton

Raath produced some excellent performances with a vastly improved heavy forehand and serve to finish sixth nationally. Against Middlesex boy Ellis Short he produced a gutsy fight back to win in a tough deciding third set tie break.

Cawsy finished a creditable 14th in his first tour finals appearance.

Head coach Jon Meredith said: “It was a pleasure to see the three Batchwood boys perform so well at the weekend. The standard of the tennis was very high and it was like watching mini professionals – they are so technically sound and aggressive.

“I was thrilled to see Oliver win the event in the fashion he did. The sky’s the limit for our current crop of 10 year old boys if they keep working hard and taking on board the coaching advice they are benefiting from.”
