Batchwood Tennis Club’s Emily Arbuthnott is out of the Australian Open Junior Championships after losing in the first round.

The 16-year-old won the first set, 6-3, against Kimberly Birrell but the Australian won the next two, 6-7, 3-6, to progress to the second round.

Her doubles campaign also came to an end in the first round as she and Olivia Hauger (USA) were beaten in straight sets by Australia’s Lizette Cabrera and Zoe Hives.

Arbuthnott’s appearence in Melbourn has moved her up to 84th in the junior U18 world rankings.
