London Colney missed out on a £3,000 windfall when they crashed out of the FA Cup after losing 1-0 to Brentwood Town in the first qualifying round.

The turning point came in the second half when Dan Power received his second yellow card and was sent off. Soon after, Courtney White scored the only goal of the game to set up a tie with Maidstone United in the second qualifying round.

The Blueboys brightly with Jimmy Warner going close with a header while, at the other end, Ryan O’Rawe and White couldn’t beat Jack Smith.

Greg Shaw whistled a shot past the post as the first half ended goalless and with the defences on top.

The Blueboys nearly took the lead after the interval as Greg Shaw’s free-kick found Sean Ridgeway, who played in Russell Gallagher. He teed up Spencer Clarke-Mardel but his header spun over the bar.

The momentum then swung in Brentwood’s favour as Power was given his marching orders. The hosts pressed forward and with the extra man advantage they were rewarded with a goal as Sam Bantick swept over a low cross to White

The Blueboys’ custodian did well to stop it becoming 2-0 when Alex Akrofi raced clear but Smith was quick off his line to block the shot with his outstretched leg.

Harry Sedgley then had a rising shot pushed away by Ollie Bowles, the Brentwood keeper, after Jimmy Hartley had knocked the ball down into his path.

Colney nearly drew level when Hartley set up Jack Woods but he blazed his effort over the bar when he had the goal at his mercy, handing the tie to Brentwood and denying the Blueboys a replay.
