Southgate Adelaide II 108-10 (29.2)

FLAMSTEAD recorded a comfortable 89-run win over Southgate Adelaide II on Saturday, with skipper Andy Taylor scoring his maiden century for the club.

As usual, Taylor lost the toss and Flamstead were inserted on a dry, hard wicket. Clark was the first to fall with the score on 27 and two runs later David Oswin was run out for a duck, following a poor call from Taylor. Matt Brown and Taylor then shared a stand of 78 with Brown dominating, before a spell of rain intervened and play was held up for half an hour.

After the resumption, Brown fell for 43 to a good catch but Taylor then put in another stand of 64 with Gordon Banks, before Banks was stumped on 25.

With only three overs left, Taylor still needed 18 for his century. He got to the last over needing seven but with Mark Ridley he scored three twos and with one ball left he was on 99. Taylor managed to push the final ball to mid-wicket to claim a well-deserved maiden century and Flamstead finished on 197-4 from 49 overs.

'Twiggy' Rogers found the fast track to his liking and started with a couple of quick overs but no luck. Chairman Tim Wilikinson started waywardly, conceding 13 off his first three overs but Rogers got the breakthrough with the score on 22 as Jack Smith took a good catch at mid-on. Rogers soon claimed another and, with Jimmy Heatly and colt Jack Smith taking one each, Southgate were struggling on 82-4.

Wilkinson got in on the act by bowling opener Flack for 12 and then he and Rogers polished off the rest of the innings. Rogers finished with figures of 5 for 31 off nine overs and Wilkinson 3 for 20 off 14.2 as Southgate crumbled to 108 all out.

Skipper Taylor was obviously delighted with both the team's and his own performance. He said: "I've waited a long time to score my first century and I'm pleased to get on the honours board. To beat Southgate Adelaide who had won their last five games was an excellent performance by the team. Matt Brown and Gordon Banks both batted well and Twiggy Rogers bowled very well and deserved his five wickets."

l Flamstead II comfortably beat Old Owens III by eight wickets, thanks to a brilliant century from Ben Brownlie, who became the club's youngest centurion at the age of 14.

He struck six sixes and 10 fours as he shared an opening stand of 128 with David Bradbury (67). He hit 20 off the last over to finish on 101 not out as Flamstead won with three overs to spare.
